ضرب المثل عموماً اپنے آپ میں مکمل اور معنی خیز جملے یا اشعار وغیرہ ہوتے ہیں جو کسی کہاوت یا روایت یا روایات کے نتیجہ کے طور پر پیدا ہوتے ہیں یا زبان زد عام ہوجاتے ہیں جب کہ اس کے الفاظ کے معانی حقیقی یا مجازی دونوں ہو سکتے ہیں.. مزید برآں ان کو تبدیل بھی نہیں کیا جاتا جیسے "سانپ بھی مرجھائے اور لاٹھی بھی نہ ٹوٹے". یا "اندھوں میں کانا راجہ". اب ان ضرب الامثال کو اپنی مرضی سے تبدیل نہیں کرتے کانا کی جگہ سیانا نہیں لگا سکتے...
محاورہ عمومی طور پر نامکمل جملہ ہوتا ہے جس کے معنی حقیقی نہیں بلکہ مجازی لیے جاتے ہیں مثلاً "دل ٹوٹنا" جس کا مطلب ہرگز نہیں کہ دل کے 2 ٹکڑے ہو گئے بلکہ اس کا مطلب ہے کہ پریشان مایوس ہونا.
ان میں موقع محل کے مطابق زمانہ کی تبدیلی بھی کی جا سکتی ہے.. مثلاً "اس کا تو دل ٹوٹ گیا" یا "ایسے نہ کہنا ورنہ اس کا دل ٹوٹ جائے گا".
